WAIC 2026 Shanghai: AI in Four Niche Verticals (July 2026)

Across ~70 booths in the H4 industry-application street, the busiest theme was niche-vertical AI agents — beyond content creation and audio/video generation, there were plenty of products for smart office, research, user-interview and legal work.

TL;DR: four niche verticals, four different pictures — research is a mature, million-visit category overseas while domestic players are just starting; user-interview is the standout niche, with Chinese products already on the global chart; legal AI is moving from answering questions to owning case workflows; and smart office is the biggest global pie, which domestic players sidestep by embedding into enterprise workflows.

Research: a million-visit category overseas, domestic exhibitors just starting

AI assistants that help researchers search literature, manage tasks and collaborate on R&D.

Elicit1.73M-16.9%

Takeaway: research-search tools are a mature overseas category with million-visit months — Consensus alone tops 5M — though June dipped 12–26% MoM, consistent with end-of-semester seasonality. The two domestic exhibitors, Codar (an “AI research buddy”) and JMuse, have no precise public traffic record yet and sit at a much earlier stage. Consumer willingness to pay is proven overseas; the domestic market is still wide open.

User-interview research: the standout niche — domestic products are already on the global chart

AI that recruits, moderates and analyzes in-depth user interviews. Two domestic exhibitors each raised ~$10M in 2026.

Takeaway: this is the only track where domestic products already show up on the global traffic chart. Trooly hit 148.8K visits in June — ahead of Strella and Voicepanel, one order of magnitude behind leader Listen Labs — and its +287.8% MoM was the fastest growth in our entire sample. Capital agrees: Trooly and Mizzen each closed ~$10M rounds in 2026 from investors including BlueRun, Hillhouse, Sequoia Seed and Fortune Capital. High-quality user input is being priced as a new data asset.

Legal: from answering questions to owning case workflows

Source: AlphaMoat.AI · Spellbook is the sum of spellbook.com + spellbook.legal (domain migration in progress); MoM not applicable

Takeaway: legal AI is B2B everywhere. Harvey charges law firms per seat; its 1.13M monthly visits reflect brand momentum more than user scale. On growth, plaintiff-firm AI Eve (+20.5%) and research assistant Paxton (+10.2%) rose fastest, and Europe’s Legora kept growing. The four domestic exhibitors all converge on case-file management + drafting + on-prem deployment, where website traffic was never the right yardstick. One signal worth noting: JurisAI closed a GSR-led Pre-A in April 2026 — the market is paying for legal workflows, not legal Q&A.

Smart office: the biggest global pie; domestic players sidestep the head-on fight

Slides, meetings, enterprise knowledge — overseas traffic runs in the tens of millions; domestic exhibitors build "digital employees" inside company workflows.

Fireflies4.51M+1.1%
Glean3.45M+8.1%
Beautiful.ai869.0K-22.1%

Source: AlphaMoat.AI

Takeaway: this is the biggest global market of the four. Gamma clears 24M monthly visits; the three AI meeting-notes products (Otter / Fathom / Fireflies) sum past 16M; enterprise-search Glean holds 3.45M and keeps growing. Almost no domestic exhibitor attacks these self-serve global products head-on. Instead they build digital employees wired into OA/ERP (Laplace), a company knowledge brain (Nama), document extraction (SoMark) — project-delivered businesses inside enterprise workflows, invisible on traffic charts but a more realistic path in China’s enterprise-software market. The exception is MaidangShow AiPPT, a Gamma look-alike worth watching for a self-serve growth curve.
Data & Methodology
Website visits are AlphaMoat estimates based on third-party data; the reporting month is June 2026 and MoM compares June vs May. Visits do not equal registered users, MAU or revenue. "No traffic record" means the domain has not entered AlphaMoat’s exact-match traffic library — not that the product has no users; this applies especially to enterprise and on-prem products. Booth and product information comes from the on-site visit to WAIC 2026 H4 (July 18, 2026) with manual verification; funding information is compiled from public reports.
